TIWIIIIIIII!

26 09 2015

Oh my goodness we got the coolest things in our mission! Our mission president has been instructing us to prepare for ipads and we got something even better! They are called TIWI’s! Its a little black box that hangs on your mirror in the car. It monitors your speed, how fast your take turns, how fast you go over bumps, how fast you accelerate, and how hard you hit the breaks! It EVEN talks to you and tells you to slow down or that you are driving aggressively if you do any of those things……This is me trying to be positive about something that i really hate… haha but its not that bad. Its frustrating because im trying to get from appointment to appointment and bring souls unto Christ through planning, finding, teaching, and baptizing but I feel like these TIWI’s are holding me back! They are trying to guard me… BUT I know they are for our safety and will be for the good of the mission! SO I am happy that we have them.

Lots of the week was spent in meetings for the tiwi boxes but we were still able to see lots of success and many miracles. James was confirmed this week. He was super happy about that. I’ve rarely seen someone SO excited to be following Jesus Christ. He reads from the Book of Mormon for hours each day. He will call us often to ask questions about his reading. And every time we go by, he tells us how much he missed us. He is awesome! The gospel changes lives!

There are a bunch of random things that really touched me this week. We were being trained on how sacred Sacrament meeting is and i realized that the sacrament is the only ordinance that we repeat for ourselves. The second time we perform other ordinances we perform them in proxy for others who are unable to do them for themselves. But the Sacrament is the only one that we can do over and over and over again for ourselves. We should really utilize the special opportunity that we have every sunday!

There were two scriptures that really touched me this week.

Mosiah 28:3

3 Now they were desirous that salvation should be declared to every creature, for they could not bear that any human soul should perish; yea, even the very thoughts that any soul should endure endless torment did cause them to quake and tremble.

The sons of mosiah had such amazing charity! Even the very thought of ANY soul perishing caused them to quake and tremble. The scripture doesnt say that the thought of their friends, or their family, or white people, or old people, or children… It says ANY soul. They understood how Heavenly Father feels about his children. He wants them ALL back. And we have a significant role in helping them come back.

Alma 48:17

17 Yea, verily, verily I say unto you, if all men had been, and were, and ever would be, like unto Moroni, behold, the very powers of hell would have been shaken forever;yea, the devil would never have power over the hearts of the children of men.

Then Moroni was just a stud. Ive read this scripture many times before but when i read it this past week….just dang….what a stud. I actually said it out loud when i read it! I started to think what made Moroni so amazing. What made him so powerful. Because i want to be like THAT guy. And i realized he was just like each of us. He started somewhere. Its a process that we all have to go through. We are all on our own individual roads to becoming like moroni, or better yet, like jesus christ. But how satisfying would it be to completely shut satan down like that! If all men were like him, satan would have NO power over the hearts of the children of men. Thats incredible. I’ll be like him one day.

I noticed something very interesting this week…When they gave out the TIWI’s we had two mission conferences. One for the south half and one for the north half. And I was able to see all my friends. Most of my friends and the ones that I really look forward to seeing are from all over the world! Its so incredible that we are all gathered here doing the same work. They are from China, Mexico, Tonga…Anywhere you can imagine! I love being here and being so united with people from all over commencing in such a great work! Its a marvelous work! Kinda makes me wonder.

Well thats about it for this week! Thanks for all yall do! I appreciate ya! Start thinking/ pondering/ praying about which friends you are going to take to General Conference.  Including the General Womens session, and Priesthood session! Because I promise you that the Lord is preparing at least one of your friends! And if you dont know who it is…. 1 nephi 15:8: And I said unto them: Have ye inquired of the Lord?

That’s what the Savior would do! Gossip is Garbage!

16 09 2015

4 But when the morning was now come, Jesus stood on the shore: but the disciples knew not that it was Jesus.

5 Then Jesus saith unto them, Children, have ye any meat? They answered him, No.

6 And he said unto them, Cast the net on the right side of the ship, and ye shall find. They cast therefore, and now they were not able to draw it for the multitude of fishes.

7 Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved saith unto Peter, It is the Lord. Now when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he girt his fisher’s coat unto him, (for he was naked,) and did cast himself into the sea.

8 And the other disciples came in a little ship; (for they were not far from land, but as it were two hundred cubits,) dragging the net with fishes.

9 As soon then as they were come to land, they saw a fire of coals there, and fish laid thereon, and bread.

10 Jesus saith unto them, Bring of the fish which ye have now caught.

11 Simon Peter went up, and drew the net to land full of great fishes, an hundred and fifty and three: and for all there were so many, yet was not the net broken.

12 Jesus saith unto them, Come and dine. And none of the disciples durst ask him, Who art thou? knowing that it was the Lord.

13 Jesus then cometh, and taketh bread, and giveth them, and fish likewise.

So that is completely random but i thought it was so funny as i was reading through the Gospel of John earlier this week. Jesus the Christ. The Son of God. Savior and Redeemer of the world. Lord of Lords. King of kings. He is making his disciples breakfast! What an act of humility. He is so perfect…

This week James Hubbard was baptized! We’ve been working with him for a little over a month now. James is one of my favorite people to be around. He is so humble. He understands repentance and forgiveness more than many of the people I’ve taught on my mission. He lives in awful circumstances and is more of a missionary than I ever was before my mission. He is the first to raise his hand to volunteer for prayer on Sunday. He is just an amazing child of God! It’s been such a privilege to work with him and see that despite an unfortunate upbringing, people really can change and choose a new way of life.

Something that has really been on my mind lately has been the subject of gossip. I believe gossip is just garbage. There is no room for gossip in our lives. Often times, a missionary will make a mistake. That missionary will repent of their mistake that they’ve made and then 5 or 6 months later, people are still talking about it. Why….? It does not make sense to me. James Hubbard has made a lot of mistakes in his life. But he has changed now. Why would it be right to constantly bring up those mistakes to him? Or to talk about them with others. It really does not accomplish anything productive. Each and everyone of us messes up on a daily basis. However, because of the Savior, we can be forgiven. We can be clean and our garments made white. The Lord will remember our sins no more. If the Lord will no longer remember our sins, why should we remember other peoples sins? Gossiping robs the atonement. It prevents people from being able to repent and leave the past in the past. How much more beneficial would it be to spend our time talking about the good traits and good things that each of us has done. That’s what the Savior would do. That is such a HAPPIER thing to talk about! Talk about how amazing people are! You can look at anyone that you will ever meet and find out something amazing about them! And love them for it! Gossip, guilt, and grudges all come from the adversary. Forgiveness, relief, and peace all come from God. We need to keep in mind that people can change. As we do that, we will be happier. We will have more peace. And we will become more like the Savior.

I’m grateful for Him and his love. For His atonement. I know that it is only through Him and that atonement that we can return to our Father in Heaven free of guilt from this life! I’m grateful for amazing friends and family who have been so supportive and nonjudgmental of me in my life. You guys are awesome!

Keep it classy! Have a great week!

Crazzzzy week! 8/31

10 09 2015

There weren’t many dull moments in the past week. It just seems like there isn’t enough time in the day! This email will probably be very random because a little bit of everything happened…

Soooo it was week 1 which means lots of friends leaving and lots of new friends coming in! It is soooo much fun to see new missionaries riding down the escalators with there bright, shining, moon faced smiles. And you can always tell which ones are from Utah…hahaha just kidding. well..kind of.. But it’s great to have their excitement and fire in the mission! We get to spend lots of time introducing them to the mission and all of the procedures that go on from day to day. Then comes the testimony meeting and their assignment to their trainers. During one of the trainings for the trainers in the mission, we had a member of our mission presidency speak and something that he said that really stuck out to me was this “Being a parent is having your heart walk around outside your body for the rest of your life”. I don’t know why but that really struck me. I felt like that was the perfect way to explain how I think my parents feel about me. And I’m eternally grateful for that. But I also know that I will feel that way for my children as well. We get a little sample of that on the mission as we work with children of our Heavenly Father and also as we train new missionaries. They really rely on you and depend on your guidance to learn how to navigate through mission life. Training has been one of my favorite things to do thus far.

Elder Dyer and I also had the opportunity to sit down with Elder Hamula. He is the seventy over all the missions in California. He just discussed with us how the riverside mission was doing. His purpose was to get acquainted with things and learn more about all of the missions in California. He is visiting 4 missions in less than a week. So he has been incredibly busy. But the spirit that he had about him was so admirable. I feel like I learned so much just from that short interview. He gave me lots of good advice that I hope to apply to the rest of my mission and also my life!

Lastly we had the opportunity to see Allan get baptized yesterday! Allan is a prime example of why member missionary work is so important! He has such a strong testimony and already wants to serve a mission. He has an amazing grasp on the principals of the gospel. Incredible faith in Jesus Christ and the plan that he has for him. Allan is a huge example to me and did something that I’m not sure I could have done. I’m so grateful for an amazing family who previously made the decision to be faithful to this gospel and be a part of Jesus Christ’s church. Because thats not the case for Allan. He is the first in his family. And his family told him that if he got baptized then they were going to kick him out. Allan is 18 and just graduated from high school. But because of his faith he still made the decision to be baptized. And because of the love and charity of ward members, he will have a place to live.

That’s about all I have time for today! So much happens every week! I wish I had time to explain it all! Thanks for all that you do! Thank you for your prayers and your continual testimonies and example to me! The Church is true! God lives! Jesus is the Christ! Love you all!

Real Quick Sept 7

10 09 2015

Let me assure you, Brethren, that some day you will have a personal priesthood interview with the Savior, Himself. If you are interested, I will tell you the order in which He will ask you to account for your earthly responsibilities.
First, He will request an accountability report about your relationship with your wife. Have you actively been engaged in making her happy and ensuring that her needs have been met as an individual?
Second, He will want an accountability report about each of your children individually. He will not attempt to have this for simply a family stewardship but will request information about your relationship to each and every child.
Third, He will want to know what you personally have done with the talents you were given in the pre-existence.
Fourth, He will want a summary of your activity in your Church assignments. He will not be necessarily interested in what assignments you have had, for in his eyes the home teacher and a mission president are probably equals, but He will request a summary of how you have been of service to your fellowmen in your Church assignments.
Fifth, He will have no interest in how you earned your living, but if you were honest in all your dealings.
Sixth, He will ask for an accountability on what you have done to contribute in a positive manner to your community, state, country and the world.

Sorry I don’t really have anytime this week! But I thought this message was super cool!

Also, really quick! I had the opportunity to give a priesthood blessing to a struggling sister and her husband in our ward. After the blessing i looked at them and they were both in tears and she told me how grateful she was and that those words were not from me but were directly from the Lord because if they were from anyone else, she would have slapped them. hahaha. But it was an incredible experience to be an instrument in the Lord hands! This is the best work! Love you all! Have a great week!

The Gospel is True…..even if 8/17

8 09 2015

27 Now when our hearts were depressed, and we were about to turn back, behold, the Lord comforted us, and said: Go amongst thy brethren, the Lamanites, and bear with patience thine afflictions, and I will give unto you success.
28 And now behold, we have come, and been forth amongst them; and we have been patient in our sufferings, and we have suffered every privation; yea, we have traveled from house to house, relying upon the mercies of the world—not upon the mercies of the world alone but upon the mercies of God.
29 And we have entered into their houses and taught them, and we have taught them in their streets; yea, and we have taught them upon their hills; and we have also entered into their temples and their synagogues and taught them; and we have been cast out, and mocked, and spit upon, and smote upon our cheeks; and we have been stoned, and taken and bound with strong cords, and cast into prison; and through the power and wisdom of God we have been delivered again.
30 And we have suffered all manner of afflictions, and all this, that perhaps we might be the means of saving some soul; and we supposed that our joy would be full if perhaps we could be the means of saving some.
31 Now behold, we can look forth and see the fruits of our labors; and are they few? I say unto you, Nay, they are many; yea, and we can witness of their sincerity, because of their love towards their brethren and also towards us.

During ward council this week our relief society president left a spiritual thought about “even if” testimonies. She talked about many different situations as well as hard times we go through and how they dont change the truthfulness of the gospel of Jesus Christ. For example..The gospel is still true even if someone tells me not to come back to church. The gospel is still true even if one of my church leaders offends me. The gospel is still true even if my family doesnt live it. The gospel is still true even if the prophet falls away. No matter what happens in our lives or in the lives of those around us, it does not change the principals and doctrines of the gospel of Jesus Christ. They are still true. We need not allow others to stand in the way of our testimonies that we have gained.

Earlier this week, Elder Anderson and I were pondering about which Zone meeting we should attend and what we should share. We both decided that we would go to the Riverside Zone ZDM. The riverside zone has been struggling a little bit and we could see on their faces that there were many in their that felt very discouraged. We saw that they were working hard and werent seeing very many results. Some companionship’s had no one to teach. Some had been working with investigators for a long time and were stuck at how to help them to progress. We saw in them the same thing that we read about in Alma 26: 27-31. We shared with the a mormon message. Its called “You never know”. The spirit was so strong as we watched the video and we testified to them of the good that they are doing. Sometimes we never see how much good we really do. There are so many fruits of our labors that occur and we never know. At the end of the video, the little boy prays and say, “thank thee that we could get done all that YOU needed us to get done today”. We have SO much that we all want to get done everyday. It is easy to get discouraged when we dont reach our goals. Or when we dont complete everything that we wanted to accomplish. But the most important thing is that we get done, the things that the LORD needs us to get done. And if you do all that you can, you have done what the Lord needs you to get done. Even when you sometimes fall short. We can then find peace in knowing that he will handle the rest in his own timing. As we left the meeting there were many people that were touched and we saw their eyes watering. Some of them expressed to us how much they really needed that message. If any of you ever feel that you arent doing enough, or that youve failed, always remember that you never know how much good youve actually done. And that the Lord never expects more than we can handle.

The Gospel is true, even if it takes 3 dunks to complete a baptism! hahahaha this week we had our investigator Jen get baptized. An older gentlemen in our ward performed the baptism. He is 82 years old. And he barely has the strength to walk. It took him 3 times, but the church is still true, and jen is now baptized! It was a great day. It was an absolute miracle that she was baptized. She has made a complete 180 with her life and changed so much. The Lord is the only one who could have made it possible.

Thats all i have time for this week! I hope everyone has enjoyed the summer! Thank you again for all that you do! It is not unrecognized or unappreciated!

Love,

Going Out with a Splash 8-24

8 09 2015

Alma came to know the Savior and then taught the people at the waters of Mormon. He “preach[ed] unto them repentance, and redemption, and faith on the Lord” (Mosiah 18:7). It was there that the people entered into a covenant of baptism “to stand as witnesses of God at all times and in all things, and in all places … , that [they] may have eternal life” (Mosiah18:9). They grew in faith, they learned to observe the Sabbath day, they learned to labor with their own hands for their support, “and they did walk uprightly before God, imparting to one another both temporally and spiritually” (Mosiah 18:29; see vv. 20–29).
We read on: “And now it came to pass that all this was done in Mormon, yea, by the waters of Mormon, in the forest that was near the waters of Mormon; yea, the place of Mormon, the waters of Mormon, the forest of Mormon, how beautiful are they to the eyes of them who there came to the knowledge of their Redeemer”(Mosiah 18:30).
Why, in this scripture, are we drawn to the waters of Mormon through the surrounding landscape? How does the description make us feel about that place—the waters of Mormon? Perhaps we should consider our surrounding landscape and what role it plays in our quest to come to the knowledge of our Redeemer.
Now is the time. If you have not already done so, now is the time to seek the place where you can come to the knowledge of your Redeemer. Where is your waters of Mormon? How beautiful to your eyes is that place?

Not much time today! So i will have to be brief! But it was another fantastic week here in Riverside California! I love this place so much! It has become my own personal waters of mormon. Its where I have begun and continue to come to know my Savior! There is no place more beautiful in my eyes than Riverside California. #RIVERSIDEPRIDE

This week we were able to baptize Karen! She was sooooo fun to teach! Elder Anderson and I began teaching her back in the first week on June. She knew it was true and knew that she needed to be baptized but kept saying if you want me to make a date then I will. May of 2030. And she would be super sassy. Which was funny. But at the same time, there wasn’t much more we could do for her because she wasn’t progressing any further. So we dropped her as an investigator. Then about 5 or 6 weeks later she called and asked us to come see her! Then she had had the most amazing change of heart and was so much more humbled! It was incredible! We continued to work with her and were able to help her be baptized. It was 100% the Lord who worked to change her heart. We were blessed to be a part of it! The best part about it all is that she had grown very close to a senior missionary couple in our mission. They leave in about 2 weeks. Its going to be super sad to see them go because I’ve grown to love them so much as well. But we suggested that she invited elder Duvall to baptize her and she did! It was so cool to see Elder Duvall baptize her just a few weeks before he went home. He said it was the first time he had baptized someone while he was out here in Riverside.

We saw many more miracles this week! One of them was a LA referral that we visited. She was going through an extremely hard time and we stopped by Friday night and met her. She was pretty shy but we invited her out to church and told her where it was. The next day, around 4 o clock, I had the strangest thing happen..We talked to someone at the door and didn’t let us in, but for the first time, they wouldn’t even let me use their bathroom. I was like well that’s rude but ok..haha So we decided we would just go to the church to use the bathroom and then we stumbled upon Samantha! She had been praying for answers and help that day and decided to get away. She went to read her bible at the church. She was outside by a pillar on some really uncomfortable concrete so we invited her in and met with her. She was very touched and came to church the next day. The ward did an amazing job at taking her in and she has been so thankful for the blessings the Lord has given her! Its so amazing to see how to Lord is very aware of where his children are at all times. And he is very aware of what they need. And he is sooo anxious to give it to them.

Thanks for all you do! I love and appreciate all of you! I hope you all have great weeks!
